My birthday wish
On my 28th birthday, these are my thoughts…
Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a mule?
The song continues with a few more animals. Mule, pig, fish, and monkey. I like the part about the fish.
Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a fish?
A fish won’t do anything, but swim in a brook
He can’t write his name or read a book
And to fool the people is his only thought
And though he’s slippery, he still gets caught
But then if that sort of life is what you wish
You may grow up to be a fish
When the peak of my life is over, I don’t want to have done nothing but swim in a brook. I wouldn’t want to grow old, not knowing what I could have done, or who I could have been. Sure, the brook is comfortable. The brook is secure. The brook is predictable, the brook is free, and the brook has lots to offer. Just ask any of them. Many fish think so.
But you see, I don’t want to be a fish. You won’t see me in the brook for long.

This one, I think I see everyday in school…
And all the monkeys aren’t in the zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
So you see it’s all up to you
You can be better than you are
You could be swingin’ on a star
Here’s the original song. I think it’s telling me something. I think it’s telling all of us something.
Here’s my addition to the song, final stanza:
I would like to swing on a star… And carry moonbeams home in a jar… But I sure can’t go very far… If I remain to be a fish.

[...] I looked up what I wrote during my last birthday. It seems like yesterday! I still remember very clearly the phase I was going through at that time. It’s like a “just got bitten by a radioactive spider” kind of phase. See last year’s post here. [...]
